Amey Conservation Area
The 259.9-acre Amey Conservation Area in Stewartstown protects a diverse landscape of forested hills, wildlife habitat, and important natural communities in Coös County. The property had been cared for by the Amey family for nearly 80 years before it was conveyed to the Ammonoosuc Conservation Trust for permanent conservation.
Approximately 100 acres of the property contain older forest, including an exemplary sugar maple community and areas that have remained relatively undisturbed since the 1930s. ACT will manage these areas to allow old-growth characteristics to continue developing, supporting biological diversity, wildlife habitat, and long-term carbon storage. The remainder of the property will be managed as a working forest, balancing sustainable timber management with conservation objectives.
The Amey Conservation Area is open for compatible public uses including hiking, hunting, snowmobiling, and educational activities. Acquisition of the property was made possible through support from Paul Amey, private donors, the New Hampshire Land and Community Heritage Investment Program, the New Hampshire State Conservation Committee Conservation Moose Plate Program, The Nature Conservancy, and the Tillotson Foundation.
