The Cooley-Jericho Community Forest has been divided into 10 compartments to facilitate management and analysis of the property. The compartments were delineated based on similarities in terrain, natural communities (potential natural vegetation), hydrology, soils, and access. The patterning of these ecological features is relatively homogeneous within each of the Ecosystem Management Compartments. See Ecosystem Management Compartment Map.

Based on the most recent round of harvesting, from 2000-2008, some of the Ecosystem Management Compartments are further subdivided into Ecosystem Management Units. The Ecosystem Management Units were delineated based on what type of harvest, or lack of, was used during the harvest and the current stage of forest development. For instance, the Northern Slope Ecosystem Management Compartment contains two Ecosystem Management Units: Ecosystem Management Unit 1: Partial Cut Intermediate Forest and Ecosystem Management Unit 2: Clearcut-Saplings and Small Poles. Each Ecosystem Management Units contains relatively homogeneous vegetation composition and structure. Compartments that were not logged or were logged entirely with the same type of harvest, were not further subdivided.
